Analyzing Discourse Abilities of Adolescents via Peer Conflict Resolution (PCR) Tasks

A substantial portion of my caseload is comprised of adolescent learners. Since standardized assessments possess significant limitations for that age group (as well as in general), I am frequently on the lookout for qualitative clinical measures that can accurately capture their abilities in the areas of discourse, critical thinking, and social communication.

One type of an assessment that I find particularly valuable for this age group is a set of two Peer Conflict Resolution Tasks. First described in a 2007 article by Dr. Marylin Nippold and her colleagues, they assess expository discourse of adolescent learners. Birthday Giveaway Day Nine:If You Take a Mouse to School Book Companion and add-on

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) for Evidence Based Practice

Last year a new Facebook Group was launched for SLPs interested in evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology. It was created for clinicians to explore and make sense of a myriad of intervention promises and questionable treatments in the fields of health care and education.

The group was established specifically for the purpose of research inquiry.   It has now reached almost 10.5K membership and contains numerous threads on a variety of scientific and pseudoscientific methods, assessments, and interventions for a wide variety of conditions.

Please join us in our efforts of continually improving the quality of services for clients in our care!

Tuesday July 30th is Trivia Night!

This Tuesday is my turn to host SLP Trivia Night. Created by Kristine of Simply Speech (graphic by Carrie of  Carrie’s Speech Corner),  Trivia Night involves different SLP Bloggers hosting a night of trivia SLP related questions on their respective Facebook pages.  Jen of Speech Universe did it on July 16, Jocelyn of Ms. Jocelyn Speech did it on July 23rd and now it’s my turn.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, July 30th) I will be hosting this event on my Facebook Page at 9:00 p.m EST.  I am going to have three different rounds at

1. 9:00 pm: First round is on Early Child Development

2. 9:15 pm: Second round is on Internationally Adopted (IA)  Children

3. 9:30 pm: Third round is on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)

Each round will consist of 5 questions on each of the above topics. Each set of questions will be posted on my blog with a link provided on my Facebook Page.

Contestants will be asked to answer ALL 5 questions under the blog entry for a chance to win.
