Inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are the most common presenting behavioral manifestations in at-risk school-aged children. This updated 120 slide presentation discusses the causes of hyperactivity, overactivity, and inattentiveness in children beyond the ADHD diagnosis. It will address select a variety of conditions which may mimic symptoms, including medical diagnoses, traumatic brain injury, language and literacy disorders,  acquired genetic disorders, as well as psychiatric disorders with similar symptomology.

Participants will be able to identify which standardized and clinical assessment batteries can be used for the determination of language related-deficits.

1 review for Differential Diagnosis of ADHD in Speech Language Pathology

  1. Communication Station: Speech Therapy, PLLC

This PPT is a very practical guide for SLPs to aid us in our differential diagnosis of speech and language deficits vs. ADHD. I really enjoy the explanations of the DSM criteria for ADHD hyperactive and inattentive types. BUT I also really love how Tatyana lists the numerous other deficits that present with similar behaviors.

My favorite part of this PPT: the case studies that are presented; each child has a different deficit but similar behaviors to ADHD. You can test your own knowledge and clinical diagnostic skills to see if you are right in guessing each child’s diagnosis. Also I really like the practical information on what was targeted in therapy and for how long (frequency, duration, type of therapy setting) and the results.

One more thing that I like: at the end of the presentation, Tatyana lists a number of checklists we can use to aid in our differential diagnosis.

GREAT info! Very practical information that I know I will use often in the future!
