App Review and Giveaway: Language Lab: Spin and Speak

Share Button

Today I am reviewing a social skills app from the Speech with Milo app developer, Doonan Speech Therapy. Language Lab: Spin and Speak is a game board-like social skills app which focuses on improving conversational abilities (e.g., answering questions, sentence formulation, basic problem solving, etc) of children with social pragmatic language deficits in group settings.

The setup is very straightforward. Add up to 5 players in one game by providing each with a fun avatar (there are 6 to choose from).

Feel free to target different pragmatic skills  for each player. You can choose from the following 7 categories:

  • Directing activities
  • Informational exchange
  • Requesting scenes
  • Discovery
  • Imaginative
  • Informative
  • Personal

Change the settings at any point in time if you decide that a particular students needs to work on a different skill. Push the spinner button to move the requisite number of spaces then answer an open ended question regarding what to do or say in particular situations.

This app is great to use with  a variety of of early elementary aged students including those with:

  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Developmental Disabilities as well as Genetic and Acquired Syndromes (e.g., Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, etc)
  • Moderate-Severe Language Disorders
  • English Language Learners with limited language proficiency
  • Low SES (with limited schooling and concepts/experiences exposure)

However, it would not be appropriate to use with higher functioning children with Asperger’s (AS), High Functioning Autism (HFA), Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NVLD), or mild-moderate social pragmatic language deficits as it would be “too easy” for them.

This app is available in the iTunes store for $4.99 or thanks to the generosity of the app’s developer, you can answer my Rafflecopter giveaway below to win 1 of 5 promo codes to try this app for free.

I want this app to have a new, engaging way to work on social skills with the many students on my caseload with goals in this area.

I already have several of the Milo apps and use them with my ASD, preschool language and ELL students. This would be a terrific addition to my sessions with these students to focus on their pragmatic goals!

I think my two children, 5 & 6, both ASD would greatly benefit from this game in terms of speech development, engagement and turn taking (touch wood)! Milo is a very much loved character in this house and I am positive the quality would be followed through in this app. Thanks for giving us all a chance!
