App Review and Giveaway: Colorful Semantics

Share Button

I first learned about Colourful Semantics (a UK originated approach to language intervention and sentence formulation) a few years ago.

This free (researched based) program uses colored squares to code different parts of speech (Noun/Subject – Who-Orange; Verb – What is doing-Yellow; Object – What-Red;  etc) to improve the child’s ability to formulate sentences.

The app (developer: London Speech Therapy) is based on that model and can be used to improve the child’s ability to

  • Identify parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives)
  • Formulate Sentences
  • Answer WH-Questions
  • Establish emergent reading
  • Establish emergent story telling

There are currently 5 app levels:

Level 1 – Who? “woman/girl/boy”
Level 2 – What doing? “is eating/is jumping/is sleeping”
Level 3 – What? “the water/the window/the pillow”
Level 4 – Where? “in the bedroom/the park/the house”
Level 5 – Describe? “long/little/pretty”

The goal is for the children to associate different parts of speech with particular colors:
Level 1 – Who? “the girl” (Subject – Orange)
Level 2 – What doing? “is drinking” (Verb – Yellow)
Level 3 – What? “the water” (Object – Green)
Level 4 – Where? “in the kitchen” (Location – Blue)
Level 5 – Describe? “clear” (Adjective – Purple)

Features:

  • Appropriate for use in group therapy as it allows for personalization
  • You can chose one or multiple activity levels
  • 14 brand new scenes have just been added to the app’s scene collection
  • Use your own photos and record your own/student’s voice for the questions

The app is appropriate for children with

  • Limited English Proficiency
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Cognitive Impairment
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Developmental Disabilities
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder
    • Down Syndrome
    • Cerebral Palsy
    • Genetic Syndromes

Thanks to the developer’s  generosity I’ll be giving away 5 copies of the Colorful Semantics app, so feel free to enter my Rafflecopter giveaway for a chance to win it.

I’ve tried this using color codes blanks with pictures on matching color blocks. My students on the spectrum and those w/language delay love it! I would love to have an app to use for the summer program!

    **BREAKING NEWS: Permanent Price Drop**

At London Speech Therapy we developed our Colourful Semantics App to support parents, schools and therapists in delivering effective and fun Speech & Language Therapy at home, in clinic and at school.

Now that we are very close to ‘breaking even’ on our app production costs we have decided to make the unprecedented move and permanently reduce the price of our app from £27.49 to £13.99.

In such tough economic times we hope that this price drop will make the app more affordable for those who will benefit from using the app.

We appreciate your fantastic support up to date and we will continue to provide updates to our app based on your feedback.

    Thanks!
